{"id":7553,"date":"2011-11-04T11:11:31","date_gmt":"2011-11-04T11:11:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eurologos-milano.com\/?p=7553"},"modified":"2015-11-04T11:16:03","modified_gmt":"2015-11-04T11:16:03","slug":"pineapple-or-ananas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eurologos-milano.com\/en\/pineapple-or-ananas\/","title":{"rendered":"Pineapple or Ananas?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Taking a look at the following table, do you notice anything strange?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurologos-milano.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/pineapple-ananas.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[5617]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5619 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eurologos-milano.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/pineapple-ananas.jpg\" alt=\"pineapple &amp; ananas\" width=\"500\" height=\"619\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2018Pineapple\u2019, the English name for the tropical plant &amp; fruit <em>Ananas<\/em> is completely different from the rest of the languages listed in the table.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pineapple\" target=\"_blank\">Wikipedia<\/a>, \u201cthe word \u2018pineapple\u2019 in English was first recorded in 1398, when it was originally used to describe the reproductive organs of conifer trees (now termed \u2018pine cones\u2019).\u201d When European explorers discovered this tropical fruit in South America, they called it \u2018pineapple\u2019 due to resemblance to what is now known as the pine cone.<\/p>\n<p>The pineapple is the leading edible member of the family <em>Bromeliaceae<\/em>. Now known botanically as <em>Ananas comosus<\/em>, <strong>the fruit has acquired few vernacular names<\/strong>. It is widely called <em>pi\u00f1a<\/em> (\u2018pine cone\u2019), or <em>anan\u00e1<\/em> by Spanish-speaking people (example, the pi\u00f1a colada drink), <em>abacaxi<\/em> in Brazilian and <em>anan\u00e1s<\/em> in Portuguese, <em>ananas<\/em> by the Dutch and French and the people of former French and Dutch colonies; <em>nanas<\/em> in southern Asia and the East Indies. In China, it is <em>po-lo-mah<\/em>; sometimes in Jamaica, \u2018sweet pine\u2019; in Guatemala often merely \u2018pine\u2019. from?<\/p>\n<p>Native to southern Brazil and Paraguay, the pineapple was apparently domesticated by the Indians and carried by them up through South and Central America to Mexico and the West Indies long before the arrival of Europeans.\u00a0(Source: the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hort.purdue.edu\/newcrop\/morton\/pineapple.html\" target=\"_blank\">NewCROP<\/a>\u00a0website)<\/p>\n<p>Its etymology could be derived \u201ceither directly from Old Tupi [1] <em>nanas<\/em> (\u2018excellent fruit\u2019), or from the taxonomic name thence derived, <em>Ananassa sativa \/ Ananas comosus<\/em>, likely under the influence of the many other languages which use the Old Tupi-derived designation<em>ananas<\/em> for the fruit.\u201d (See <a
